US: Coborn’s names Dave Meyer president
St. Cloud, Minnesota-based grocer Coborn’s Inc. named current chief operating officer Dave Meyer as the new president of the company. Meyer is only the 2nd person outside the Coborn family to hold that position in the 101-year history of the company. He replaces Chris Coborn, who will continue to lead the company as chairman and CEO.

US: ALDI opens 2 stores in Buford and Marietta, expanding the grocery retailer’s presence in Atlanta area to nearly 60
Value grocer ALDI debuted stores in Buford and Marietta, at 1705 Mall of Georgia Blvd. and 249 Cobb Parkway SE, respectively. Buford welcomed the new grocery store on Thursday, January 6, 2022, and an opening in Marietta is planned for Thursday, January 20, 2022. Both stores will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. These new locations are part of the company’s “aggressive” national expansion, the company told What Now Atlanta in an email.

Instacart doubles down on its ready-made meals offering with new hub and faster delivery
Instacart is introducing a new “Ready Meals” hub to make it easier for users to discover and order ready-made meals from grocery stores on its app. The on-demand grocery delivery platform has offered ready-made meals since January 2020 but says the option was not as visible or prominent in its app, which is why it’s launching the new hub.

Tesco to expand 'Whoosh' delivery service to 600 stores
Tesco has announced that its 1-hour delivery service Whoosh will be rolled out to at least 600 stores by the end of 2023, expanding the retailer's presence in the quick commerce arena. On a conference call to announce the group's 3rd quarter and Christmas trading results, Tesco's Ken Murphy revealed that Whoosh is currently available from 115 Tesco stores, and will be in "about 200 stores by the end of the financial year", before a rapid expansion next year.

Portugal: Jerónimo Martins sees sales surpass €20bln milestone
Portuguese retail group Jerónimo Martins surpassed the €20bln sales milestone in full-year 2021, with all the group's banners contributing to its positive performance. According to preliminary data filed to the Securities and Exchange Commission (CMVM), sales increased 8.3% year-on-year (+10.7% at constant exchange rates, +8% like-for-like), to €20.9bln.

The Dutch spend €40mln on flash delivery
Flash delivery startups have seen their turnover grow in the Netherlands. Research estimates that by the end of 2021, Dutch consumers were spending around 40mln euros per month on flash deliveries. This growth is expected to continue throughout this year, meaning that a total turnover of 1bln euros can be achieved in 2022. Research in November 2021 by Kantar, a Dutch research agency, concludes that around 700.000 Dutch consumers make use of flash delivery services. This is a strong growth, because in the 1st half of 2021, that amount was estimated at 200.000.

DMA talks should result in clear rules for all players: EuroCommerce
EuroCommerce has reiterated its support for a Digital Markets Act (DMA) for the retail and wholesale sectors in Europe ahead of the talks between the European Parliament, Council and Commission. EuroCommerce director general Christel Delberghe said: "We ask co-legislators to ensure that the rules finally adopted are workable, clear for all players, and do not create unnecessary burdens or costs. In particular, we ask that the DMA reflects fully the differences between the various services provided by platforms and avoids fragmentation of the single market”.

Lidl sees the strongest growth in France in run up to Christmas: Kantar
Lidl outperformed the rest of the French grocery market in the run up to Christmas, with rival Aldi also putting in a strong performance, the latest data from Kantar has shown. According to Kantar data for the P13 period (29 November to 26 December), Lidl posted growth of 0.6 percentage points, taking its market share to 6.9%.
