For the past two years, given the growing demand for these references, Biotropic has developed a specific range of small exotic fruit. “This organic range has five niche products, including purple passion fruit, pitayas, physalis, maracujas, Ataulfo and Edward mangoes as well as papayas transported by plane to guarantee optimal freshness to our customers. Some references like the passion fruit are popular all year round, but the demand does increase around the Christmas holidays,” explains Christine Cortes, in charge of developing the Biotropic selection.
“These exotic fruits come from Latin America (Ecuador, Colombia) and Africa (Ghana, Cameroon), with producers who are 200% committed to the organic approach, very much invested, passionate and proud of their products. They harvest the fruits when they are ripe on the tree and pack them very carefully. In terms of taste, these fruits are excellent. Taking all this into account, we want to help them grow by showing that their products are not only beautiful but also tasty, and that they are cultivated in an ethical way. We are looking for new exotic products to expand our range.”
Like several other winter, off-season and exotic fruit and vegetables at the moment, Biotropic has been impacted by the lack of consumption on the market. “It is particularly true of the classic references such as pineapples or mangoes (own production available all year). Sales are notably slower. But despite the low consumption, the sales of small exotic fruits are increasing. Our clients in Europe are satisfied with the quality and so are we. Our products are available all year round, according to the seasonality of each region.”
