Kenneth Meyer, Natural Tropic:

"Kumquats are a true Christmas item, Cherimoya sold all season"

Natural Tropic's range has popular exotics like avocados and mangoes. It supplements that assortment with lesser-known products like kumquats and Cherimoya. This Spanish company supplies these products as both conventional and organic.

"Particularly, kumquats are a true Christmas item," says sales manager Kenneth Meyer. "We're only starting these next week. Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are especially good buyers. These are mainly resold via Dutch traders."

"After New Year's, kumquat sales fall right away again. Not so, Cherimoya. These seem to keep selling reasonably well, even after the turn of the year. A few years ago, we were still getting only boxes. But now we do a nice volume. The local Cherimoya market is fairly large, and especially the large calibers remain in Spain."

Spanish avocado sales have to still get underway, says Kenneth. "It's not going as smoothly as last year. Countries like Israel, Chile, Mexico, and Colombia mean there are many origins on the market. Spanish avocados are usually more expensive, so it's then hard to compete. I do expect sales to improve from mid-December."

"The Spanish Hass avocado harvest is similar to last year's. With Greenskins, there are many very small fruits. That's due to this year's lack of rain. Large Hass avocados are selling for €11.50 to €12. There are more medium and small sizes, so their prices are lower. Organic avocados sales are, however, going better," Kenneth concludes.
