Great satisfaction for the quality

Good start for the Sicilian avocado season

The cultivation of the Sicilian avocado has begun. Alessandro Scurria, manager at Fondaco in the Sicilian town of Torrenova talked about the harvesting.

This crop can benefit from extremely favorable soil and climate conditions, bordered on one side by the Nebrodi Mountains and on the other by the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The farm has, due to its location, a good balance between sun and wind.

"This is the first productive year and we are progressively harvesting fruits with great organoleptic quality, according to the correct ripeness. The opinions of the experts who are analyzing, on our behalf, the progress of the 10 hectares plant, are all impressed positively by the results of the production," said Alessandro Scurria.

"Tests and statistics are proving us right - he continued - because we have correctly chosen the best cultivation area, the right exposure to winds and the proper quantity and quality of irrigation water; in short, we have what it takes to compete with the best European production standards, with the advantage of geographical proximity to the major consumer markets of central and northern Europe. This year we expect to harvest a good quantity of Hass avocados, but the quantities will change next year, provided that the weather will help us. For this reason, we are planning anti-hail nets and windbreaks to ensure a great quality and quantity of product".

In the coming years, the avocado crop will have a planned expansion to 50 hectares. Fondaco is a company with great potential, which for several years has been growing Wonderful pomegranates on four hectares of land, which are grown according to the Israeli method, striving exclusively for high quality.

"We don't want to leave any room for doubt, on the quality of our products. We started this path in the best way, allocating only the freshest crops for the markets. We will do the same with avocados right from the beginning, so that Fondaco will be linked to quality," continued Scurria.

"We are applying the same strategy to our lime crop. Moreover, starting this year, it will be possible to buy our crops online through nameravigghia.it."

Fondaco started the process of organic certification for its lime and avocado crops some time ago.
