Jan Franje, Franje Onions:

"Making a profit in the onion trade is not easy at the moment".

"It is currently very difficult to make your margin in the onion trade. The growers are stuck on it and the bale price doesn't really want to go up," observes Jan Franje of Franje Onions. "If you do the math to buy and sell, there is nothing in between. The price of yellow onions is currently around 17/18 cents. The price of red onions is generally a bit higher, but for this variety the difference in sales between the fine and coarse sizes is also very big."

"Everything has become a lot more expensive, from packaging, pallets, energy to transport. If you had told me about these additional costs last year, I would have laughed at you. In addition, the logistics situation is still dramatic. Every time there are problems with shortages of containers and delays. Whether it really hinders export, I do not know, but it certainly does not help. It seems like nothing is going as normal anymore," sighs the onion packer.

"All that's normal is the demand. All destinations are participating to some extent, but they are all just very ordinary orders. The situation is very different from last year. There are some onions going to distant destinations and Central America, but it is all very mediocre. I hear that here and there onions are still waiting to be harvested, but we have closed the off-loading season, although you never know whether a batch will turn up. Fortunately, we do not have too many problems in terms of quality," concludes Jan.
