"The reason why spinach is so popular this year is mainly because the total supply is limited. In the early stage, many major producing areas such as Hebei suffered continuous rainfall and some production areas were flooded. This not only led to a reduction in production to a certain extent but also affected the overall quality of spinach. There is not much spinach that can meet the quality requirements of large e-commerce platforms and chain supermarkets. Therefore, the market will be out of stock from time to time," Mr. Xu Luqiu from Heze Tianlan Fruit and Vegetable Cooperative said in an interview with FreshPlaza.
Mr. Xu Luqiu said, “At this stage, the spinach available in the market is mainly from northern producing areas such as Hebei and Tianjin. For the southern market, logistics is also a problem. The increase in transportation costs and poor shipments caused by flooded production areas has also led to delays in arrival and the quality of spinach after reaching the destination is not satisfactory. "
According to Mr. Xu's prediction, this sky-high price of spinach will last at least 1-2 weeks. Under normal circumstances, spinach from Shandong, one of the largest major spinach producing areas, will be available in large quantities, and market supply will be eased to a certain extent, but it is certain that the overall price of spinach this year will be running at a higher price level.
