Quico Peiró, Director of Operations of Cañamás Hermanos:

"This campaign will be more balanced, with lower volumes and larger calibers"

The 2021/2022 Spanish citrus campaign started a few weeks ago with the first clementines.

"We have our eyes set on our warehouse in Betxí (Castellón), which specializes in packaging citrus fruits with leaves. It is a point of reference and differentiation in the market, due to the proximity between the field and the point of preparation, thus ensuring the freshness and high quality of the product," stated Quico Peiro, Director of Operations at Cañamás Hermanos.

"This campaign will be more balanced than the previous campaigns. Volumes will be lower than last season, within normal levels in the general campaign, and sizes will be better so there will be a decrease in food waste," he added. "We also expect a more stable demand compared to the last two campaigns, which will allow us to comply with our customers' orders," he said.

According to Peiro, while it's true that this campaign will be marked by the presence of Egypt as a leading supplier to the European market, the Spanish citrus production is based on high standards that ensure that it has all the necessary specifications to meet the market's quality, food safety, proximity, and sustainability (both environmental and economic-social) demands. "Agricultural practices in our sector are subject to rigorous control at all levels, including cultivation methods and the use of phytosanitary products, production, packaging, and professional relationships, always complying with the SDGs and the 2030 agenda's productive, economic, and social requirements."

"The BioDiversity Grow certification allows us to grow citrus fruits that are more respectful of the environment, maintaining their taste quality, and applying efficient water resources management systems to reduce the impact of our activity on the environment. In addition, the proximity between the crops and the production centers shortens the processes and helps us maintain the optimum quality of the fruit. The packaging centers are also energy efficient as they produce their own energy via cogeneration and photovoltaic panels. In addition, we are ending our transition to compostable packaging and more recyclable packaging, in accordance with the company's sustainability policies," he stated.

"In this campaign, we'll once again prove that the national citrus production is marketed abroad because of its value, mainly in the European market, one of the world's most demanding markets in terms of taste quality, food safety, and sustainable practices. These demands have marked the differentiation and positioning of the Spanish citrus sector for years," concluded Quico Peiro.
