Autonomous shopping option enables late-night supermarket shopping

Bünting opens innovative Combi City store in Emden

Imagine that, your way home, you can quickly do a little shopping for supplies in the city center or pick up a snack for the break. From October 14 onward, this will be possible in the new 500 m2-plus Combi City store in the city center of Emden, the Bünting Group reports. What is special about this market is that, in addition to traditional shopping, autonomous shopping is also possible during the extended opening hours. With the new Combi City store, a hybrid walk-in solution is thus opening in Emden, East Frisia, which is so far unique in Germany on this scale.

A modern fresh food store in a trendy industrial design with a compact supermarket assortment on a sales area of over 500 square meters: this is what the Combi City store looks like, with which the Bünting Group is now ensuring a city-friendly supply of everyday goods in the heart of Emden. In addition to a basic assortment for everyday life, the store primarily offers assortments relevant to the city center for residents, professionals, hotel guests in the surrounding area and passers-by who want to get something to eat quickly and easily. The focus is on freshness; freshly prepared salads and desserts, a large fruit and vegetable section, beverages, fresh and chilled juices, and an extensive selection of regional and organic items.

Shopping with more flexibility and convenience
Germany's largest innovative walk-in solution combines two shopping options: During core opening hours, the supermarket is operated in the classic way, but in addition, customers can shop autonomously during extended opening hours. Customers in Emden will be able to find the most extensive range of products to date in a completely autonomous shopping experience. "We have designed the Combi City store as a fully-fledged supermarket. So, as a complementary service, we also offer our customers the opportunity to choose from the full range of products - from fresh to chilled and frozen foods - during the extended opening hours. Our customers can do their shopping completely autonomously during the extended opening hours thanks to digital access, article registration and payment solutions," Bünting CEO Markus Buntz explains.

All that is needed for access is the bank card or the Bünting customer card (Moin Card) as an app or as a physical card, and the payment process proceeds cashless via the self-checkout counters. The Combi-City store is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.. From 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., the opening hours will be extended and customers will additionally be able to access and shop autonomously at the Combi store.

Bünting invests in future-oriented innovations
For many years, constant development and investment in innovative technical solutions regarding customer needs has been an integral part of the corporate culture of the Bünting Group. In summer 2020, the East Frisian trading company already opened a 24/7 vending machine in Oldenburg. In order to remain competitive as a major employer in northwest Germany, the Bünting Group is now taking the next step with the hybrid walk-in solution at the Combi store in Emden.
