Ethiopian avocado growers intent on penetrating the global market

Ethiopian farmers in the regions of Amhara and Oromia are preparing to export avocados to the international market. More than 400 farmers in the Amhara region, as well as several others in the Oromia region, are prepared to export high-quality avocados.

Nine agricultural clusters in the Amhara region will soon begin exporting Hass avocados cultivated on 200 hectares of land, Ethiopia's Agricultural Transformation Agency announced. The agency related that 447 farmers in North Mecha Woreda of West Gojjam Zone are taking part in producing export-standard avocados.

The ATA noted that 160 tons of avocados from 156 of the 337 farmers has already been collected, prepared, weighed, and packed and made ready to be distributed for the international market. Farmers from the Oromia region are poised to export 16 tons of avocado produce to various countries. reports how, recently, the country carried out its first export of avocados by train from Modjo Dry Port, under a pilot project forming part of the National Cool Logistics Network. The 24-ton refrigerated consignment, which marks a major milestone in the development of a cool logistics corridor by sea, was produced by dozens of farmers in the Koga area, south of Bahir Dar, and packed by KogaVeg Agricultural Development.
