Producer prices of agricultural products were up 13.3% in August 2021 compared to the same month in 2020, up 1.2% from July 2021. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the price increase of 23.4% for crop products in August 2021 compared with August 2020 was mainly due to higher cereal prices, as in previous months.
For vegetable and horticultural products, the year-on-year price increase in August 2021 was 11.9%. This was due in part to a 16.9% increase in prices for plants and flowers.
Prices for vegetables as a whole rose by 8.5% in August 2021 compared with the same month a year earlier. There were larger price increases, especially for lettuce with +61.7%. This is due to current low supply volumes on the market.
For table potatoes, prices increased by 21.2% year-on-year. This is the first price increase since September 2019. In July 2021, the year-on-year price decrease was still -23.0 . Prices increased in August 2021 due to low crop volumes and the resulting tight supply in the market.
