This year's Brazilian melon season got off to a complicated start. "Delays meant the overseas season didn't connect well to the end of the Spanish one. Those shortages resulted in a hefty price surge. Now, however, prices are crashing back to their old level," says Bertus Schipper of Zoutewelle Import/Export in the Netherlands.
"Prices are still reasonable, but they're not great anymore. Watermelons (Quetzali) are currently going for around €0.65, €0.75 for seedless. Galia and Cantaloupe are still priced at €7 for 5kg. And yellow melon prices work out to be €0.75 per kilo. The same goes for Piel de Sapo melons. There are quite a few Spanish ones of these on the market. There aren't yet many small sizes, though. So, those prices are at a slightly higher level."
"The season is only a few weeks old and there's still a long way to go. It remains to be seen what volumes we continue to get. For now, there's plenty of supply. Things like sea freight and cardboard costs have increased. So, I expected Brazil to send fewer melons to Europe. But supplies are at similar levels as previous years," Bertus concludes.
