French ginger production makes a timid debut

Well-known for its benefits and therapeutic virtues, 80% of the ginger currently found in French stores comes from China, India, as well as Peru and Brazil (18%). Italy was the first country in Europe to grow this exotic plant, and today, France is starting its own production. 

The harvest has just started for Kylian who has been experimenting with growing ginger in greenhouses for the past 3 years. “The smell is really interesting, with its citrus lemony fresh side.” The season looks promising for this producer based in the Indre department. Kylian hopes to produce 1,000 tons this year. “At the very beginning, there were about 20 plants, but we’ve expanded, going from 20 to more than 1,000 plants now.” Sold at 12 euros/kg [13.90 USD/kg], which is twice as expensive as the ginger from China.
