Jean-Baptiste Pinel, Primland:

“The Spanish market is very active in kiwi production and consumption”

Primland was represented at Fruit Attraction this year in Madrid. A meeting that Jean-Baptiste Pinel, manager of the company, did not want to miss. “First of all, it was important for us to be present because there hadn’t been an event of this scale for 2 years. As an operator on the market, it was also interesting to exhibit for several reasons. We have been selling kiwis since the 1990s in Spain, where consumption levels are quite high - reaching 3kg per capita /year -, with sales increasing by 8% on average each year. But we also produce in Spain, so Fruit Attraction is the opportunity for us to see both our clients and suppliers from Spain, as well as from large exports, even if their presence was limited due to the pandemic this year. Overall, we were very satisfied because the event was very active for three days.”

An offer available all year round on the Spanish market

The event was also the opportunity to talk about the development of Primland and the Oscar brand with the Hispania label in Spain. “New orchards are coming into production this year, and we wanted to take advantage of this fair to communicate this with our clients. We also wanted to reaffirm the fact that our offer is available all year round on the Spanish market, thanks to the local production as well as the production from Chile in off-season, but also thanks to an extended varietal selection. Finally, we discussed our development in different regions to bring production and consumption zones closer together.”

An objective to develop plantations in Spain

In 2020, the Spanish kiwi production (mainly located in Galicia and Asturias) decreased by 6 to 8%, but prices were interesting and sales were good. Consumption, on the other hand, has been increasing in recent years, an observation made even more obvious with the Covid pandemic. The Spanish market seems to have a preference for Gold kiwis. In order to respond to the increase in consumption in Spain, Primland had already planted 15 hectares of orchards in 2016 in Asturias (10 ha of yellow kiwis, 4 ha of Hayward kiwis and 1 ha of mini Nergi kiwis). The company does not intend to stop there, and is planning to further develop its Spanish production in the future.
