Trops consolidates its position in mango and avocado with 148 million euro in sales

The Trops cooperative has managed to stand out and place the avocado as one of the new benchmarks in Andalusian agriculture. In fact, this firm from Malaga, has a 45% national market share in avocados and a 55% share in mangoes.

Trops, which turned 42 last week, currently groups more than 3,000 associates that together have more than 6,000 hectares of crops. Its main production area is concentrated in the region of the Axarquia and the Costa Tropical de Granada, although it also has partners along the coast of Valencia, the Portuguese Algarve, and even in South America (Peru and Chile).

In addition, the cooperative continues to grow year on year. For example, this summer Trops has bought the Herco Frut firm, a subtropical fruit packaging and marketing company based in Almuñecar (Granada). Moreover, the last Assembly of the cooperative also approved the registration of another 302 new farmers. Three months ago, Trops signed an important agreement to market the products of the Agricultural Cooperative of Callosa d´en Sarrià (Alicante), which accounts for more than half of the national loquat production and has more than 1,200 farmers.

Currently, the avocado accounts for approximately 75% of Trops' turnover, with more than 40,000 tons, while mango currently accounts for a quarter, with more than 15,000 tons, although it is a growing crop among consumers. Sales of guacamole and other fourth-range products have also grown significantly and now account for 5% of its turnover.

Trops undisputed leadership in Spain, either through numerous chains and large supermarkets or through the hospitality industry, is only a small part of the cooperative's success, as Trops aspires to be a world benchmark. "We are a company that operates in international markets successfully competing at a very high level of quality and service," stated Colilles.

In fact, Trops sells 80% of its avocado and mango production outside of Spain, especially in the European Union, where it already has a market share of approximately 7%; however, it ships its fruits to 25 different countries.

The company's growth in the last decade has been meteoric, after multiplying its turnover by six. According to its CEO, the company closed this season (the campaign ends on July 31) with total sales of 148 million euro, i.e. a 10% increase over last year.

However, Trops considers it is far from reaching its ceiling. According to the company's strategic plans, it forecasts to continue growing at double digits in the coming years.
