Tjerk Nagel, Konaxx Onions:

"Good, diverse onion demand with stable prices"

"We can't complain about the onion market, but it's not exceptional either," says Tjerk Nagel of Konaxx Onions in the Netherlands. "The advance forecasts were dire. However, the lower yields have created a bit of a mood. And we all benefit from that."

"Prices are currently stable. Grower prices are at €0.10/€0.11. I don't think that level will rise or fall dramatically either. Lately, in the Netherlands, in every five years, there's been a top year. There are two where you can make a living if you manage to sell in time. Then there's a terrible year and one that surprises you. We've now had the good, the bad, and the surprising year. So my advice is to remain alert and sell on time."

"Demand is good and diverse. At this time in other years, exports were purely focused on Africa. Now, they're also loading for Eastern Europe and Asia. But there's also plenty of supply. We can, therefore, continue at this level for a while. The container shortages are still commonplace. It takes great effort to get them. But, there's usually hardly any trade that doesn't leave because of that shortage," Tjerk concludes.
