US: Wakefern adopts reusable plastic containers for fresh produce
Wakefern Food Corp. aims to cut food and plastic waste in store produce departments through the use of reusable plastic containers (RPCs). The Keasbey, New Jersey-based grocery retail cooperative, whose supermarket banners include ShopRite, said that it has partnered with IFCO Systems, Tosca and other companies that specialize in RPCs to improve the quality and sustainability of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as lower costs for shoppers.

Orchata raises $4mln, aims to build a ‘Gopuff for Latin America’
Luis Mario Garcia grew up in Mexico making deliveries for the grocery stores in his neighborhood. After honing his startup skills in San Francisco, he returned to Mexico with the idea of building a software company. That’s when he met his co-founder Javier Gonzalez and the pair started Orchata in 2020, a mobile app enabling consumers to get groceries delivered in 15 minutes, with no substitutes and at supermarket prices. Products delivered include fresh fruit, beverages, bread, medicine and household essentials, Garcia told TechCrunch.

Poland: Carrefour accelerates expansion into convenience
Carrefour Poland is ramping up its presence in the convenience market, with the group announcing that it has opened 52 new convenience outlets to date this year. The new stores include 36 Carrefour Express convenience stores and mini-markets, 8 petrol station outlets and 8 outlets under the Globi brand. The retailer has opened the new branches in major urban areas such as Warsaw, Kraków and Wrocław, as well as in smaller towns including Węgorzewo, Kraśnik, Świecie, Luboń and Zakopane.

Russia: Magnit shares drop after access denied to state inspectors
Shares in Russian food retailer Magnit dropped after the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) said its employees had been refused entry to a building housing Magnit offices and that company officials would be held liable. The FAS said it was carrying out inspections at supermarket chains Magnit, X5 and Lenta, following complaints from citizens over rising prices, including of important food products.

Reuters reported: Saudi Arabian supermarket retailer BinDawood Holding said profits in the second quarter were down almost 50%, as last year's figures were higher because of a boost in sales amid COVID-19 lockdown panic-buying and hoarding. The retail supermarket said net profit in the quarter ended June 30 was 95mln riyals ($25.33mln), compared with 185.4mln riyals in the same period last year.

Sales of stacks of strawberries, a bounty of bananas and container-loads of cucumbers purchased by Tesco customers mean that over 5000 charities across the country will now be given food to help the 2.3mln children in the UK living in food insecurity.

GS Retail Co Ltd said it had partnered with 2 private-equity firms to buy Delivery Hero’s food delivery app, Yogiyo, in a deal valued at 800bln won ($685mln). UK: McColl's posts ‘resilient results’ with continued LFL sales growth in H1
Convenience retailer McColl's Retail Group has reported a 1% like-for-like sales growth in the first half of its financial year against a strong comparative period last year and a two-year like-for-like sales growth of 7.4%. In this period, total revenue declined 5.3% to £572.7mln, from £604.8mln in 2020, principally reflecting store closures.

Zomato had recently invested $100mln for acquiring a minority stake in grocery delivery platform Grofers with the intention to add a grocery delivery section on its app. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved Zomato's bid for acquiring 9.3% stake in the online grocer Grofers and Hands on Trades. This would mark the food delivery aggregator's entry into online grocery retail, a segment that has seen significant growth during the pandemic.

UK: Tesco gears up London Express store with “just walk out” tech
Tesco has spruced up its Express store in London’s High Holborn as it reopens the site as its first “just walk out” branch. The Tesco Express store recently reopened after a period of refurbishment with new pay gates and a host of cameras installed in the ceiling. While the technology is not yet operational, it is expected to be the first public-facing Tesco store equipped with its Trigo-powered version of Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology.
