The aromatic garden of the Italian company Ortoflorovivaistica F.lli Simonato

Organic herbs on the rise thanks to health and environmental concerns

"One of the emerging trends in Italian consumption is the increased focus on healthy food. There is a growing awareness that organic products are a valuable ally for those who lead a lifestyle focused on health, respect for the environment and the consumption of quality products," said Carlo Simonato, owner of the Italian family company Ortoflorovivaistica F.lli Simonato.

The cultivation and marketing company is located in the province of Padua and is one of the main players in the European and Italian market for organic aromatic plants. Last year, it also started growing seedlings for the production of tomatoes, lettuce, eggplants, zucchini and cauliflowers. However, for the last twenty years, it has mainly focused on and specialized in the cultivation of organic aromatic herbs, such as basil, rosemary, sage, mint, marjoram, thyme, oregano and hot peppers.

"Italy is a leader in Europe in terms of area and variety of organic crops. As a specialized company, we have always served both the Italian and foreign retail markets. Mediterranean consumers prefer chili and oregano, while in Northern Europe chives and dill are popular. Since in summer everyone loves fresh produce, there is always a high demand for aromatic herbs such as basil, which you then often see on the table to flavor the dishes."

"Our packaging is innovative and recyclable thanks to large investments in the R&D department. BioKepos (biodegradable, compostable and recyclable) and BioPaperPack (recyclable). Currently, we use moderate amounts of plastic for our greenhouse crops, and only recycled plastic. We believe that it remains a raw material that should not be demonized. We just need to make sure we use it wisely."

"We have an extensive sales network in Italy and abroad and our main marketing channel is supermarket chains. This is a guarantee for the consumer, since they are the first to carry out quality checks and are in close contact with the growers. This cooperation between retailers and farmers is essential in order to always provide a quality product, at the right time and with a price-quality ratio that respects the entire supply chain," said Carlo Simonato.

"We believe in social initiatives and intergenerational innovation. "In addition to various charitable initiatives, we have also set up a 'Young Team' in the company, made up of around fifteen people aged between 20 and 30. For some of them, this is their first work experience, and they receive training in the different departments of the company. They are young people who are motivated, keep their eyes open for what is happening around them in the world and are aware that the future is in their hands. All of them have mastered technology and IT, which is essential for fast communication within the company, yet they are sensitive people who, for example, at the transplanting stage, marvel at the tiny roots that are beginning a new life. We will also tell all this to the customers who come to visit us at the trade fairs planned for 2022, as we will be participating in Biofach in Nuremberg and in Fruit Logistica in Berlin," concluded Rosanna Bertoldin and Belinda Piasentin, marketing managers of F.lli Simonato.
